Tara Johnson's sacrifices are about to pay off: a senior executive at thirty-five at a Fortune 500 company, she's one of the two finalists in line for a Managing Director position. Unfortunately, her rival of fifteen years, the charming, infuriating Richard Boyd, is just as qualified, and unlike her, he's willing to cross pretty much every line to get what he wants.

Of all the things Tara stored in the attic to make it to the top, it's her personal life she misses the most. That is, until she starts a steamy affair with sex god Aidan, her direct report. Interoffice relationships with a subordinate can mean the end of a career, and when Richard finds out, it's the perfect opportunity to take his high-heeled nemesis out, especially since he's still nursing a grudge against Tara for rejecting him years ago.

But Tara's increasingly domineering lover has his own dark secrets, endangering more than just her career. As her liaison spirals out of control, salvation will come from the man she always thought she hated, and perhaps the only one to truly understand her.

Interview

What is the hardest part of writing your books?
The hardest part for me is promotions. Every writer, I think, hopes their books will sell themselves, and then we get ready to publish and realize how much work goes into marketing. I am in awe of self-published authors—well, actually any authors who published their books—because it really takes a lot of effort to get your book out into the world. When you work on promotions, you are not writing, which is a hard thing for someone who loves crafting stories.

What songs are most played on your Ipod?
I play different songs, depending on what I am writing. When I was writing The Corner Office, I was playing a lot of power rhythmic songs like Kongos’ Come with Me Now. It gets me into the mood and when I start writing, the words just flow.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?
I have several critique partners who played an important part in me evolving as a writer. One of my earliest critique partners is Camilla Monk, whose series Spotless is very dear to my heart. It’s funny, dark, witty all at the same time, and sometimes when I lack writing inspiration all I need to do is pick up one of her books and read a chapter, and I am once again good to write.
Critique partners and beta readers are key for all authors, especially during those dark self-doubting moments.

What book are you reading now?
I am reading Nudes by Sarah Robinson. I was fortunate to meet Sarah online, and she helped me in my publishing career. She is an amazing person who is always willing to help other authors. But what I find so special and inspirational about her is how smart she is in regards to promoting her work. She runs it like a true publishing business, and she already has huge following.

How did you start your writing career?
I always had aspirations to write but I never found the time. One day I woke up after a sleepless night—one of my kids had a cold and kept waking up every fifteen minutes—I was grumpy, tired and frustrated at having to go to work. Then I took a bus and sat next to a young girl who seemed upset. We started talking and she told me about her dream of opening her own hair salon. She came up with many reasons why it was a bad time to do it: the economy wasn’t great, she didn’t have enough money, her boyfriend was cheating on her. I tried to convince her that she could do it, that there was never a good enough time. She thanked me and we said our good-byes. A few months later, I ran into her again and she proudly showed me her business card. She pursued her dream, and she thanked me because I was the final straw that convinced her to do it. When I came home that night, I powered up my laptop and wrote “Chapter 1”. I’ve never looked back since.

Tell us about your next release.
I signed a contract with Lachesis Publishing to publish the first novel in my Romantic Suspense series, Under the Scrubs. It’s a fun, adventure packed novel about a young OBGYN woman who accidentally gets involved with an FBI agent and in a murder case. She is your down-to-earth girl next door who’s into baking and homemade meals. Her dating life has been put on hold for too long due to studies and residency, and when she meets this mysterious, intense guy in a chance encounter, she is instantly drawn to him. The novel would be your typical opposites attract story, except the setting is a high-stakes murder case, and the main character gets thrown into life-or-death situations where she has to play a hooker, break into a prison and fight for her life. This has been such a fun novel to write that I’ve already finished the first draft of a sequel, which is based on a Caribbean island, called Scrubs Overboard. I can’t wait to share this series with all of you.
